FORTRAN was invented in 1957. The first serious numerical weather prediction runs were done in FORTRAN on early IBM mainframes in the 1950s. The National Weather Service still runs FORTRAN. NCAR runs FORTRAN. Most global climate models are FORTRAN. It is the language the atmosphere was computed in, and it still is.
CASCADIA-WX reads live NRCS SNOTEL snowpack data from 11 stations across Rainier, the Olympics, and the Cascades, combines it with NOAA surface temperatures at valley airports, and computes environmental lapse rates, snow levels, precipitation phase partitioning, degree days, atmospheric river index, and storm classification — all in FORTRAN. The sister project to SIERRA-FLOW, which does the same for Sierra Nevada streamflow in COBOL.
This page reads analysis.csv — written by FORTRAN — and renders everything live. Updated every morning at 8AM Pacific via GitHub Actions.
SIERRA-FLOW — The COBOL sister project. Live USGS streamflow for 8 Sierra Nevada gages. Daily GitHub Actions.
Sierra Streamflow Monitor — 20-year spaghetti charts, Leaflet map, Tuolumne/Merced/Stanislaus.
EDGAR — Mariners/Rainiers baseball analytics. Nightly updates.
