An insurance loss adjuster on a station where the death is already ruled accidental — and the policy pays eleven million if it stays that way. Six pieces of evidence, three suspects, one liar, and a policy document you can use as a weapon: clause 12.4 costs a witness their own cover if they withhold, and clause 15.2 says an endorsement is void unless somebody typed their job title next to it. Somebody did. Then you have ninety days to make your finding survive a challenge.

Nye County, Nevada. Your Jeep stops on a two-track a long way from the graded road, and the only real question is whether anybody knows you came out here. Real USGS terrain, a real heat cycle, and no idea how far anything is until you climb somewhere and look. Somewhere out there is a geocache nobody has signed since 2004, and the man who kept it left water cached all over this valley — which is the only reason you might live.
